Finance your Open Access publication with Purchase to Open

Information for Authors

Would you like to publish your academic monograph or anthology as open access – without having to bear the full cost yourself?

Purchase to Open makes exactly that possible: through an innovative, solidarity-based funding model in which academic libraries collectively fund individual publications – transparently and on a community basis.

The concept: crowdfunding for academic books

For each publication, the publisher sets a specific funding target. Libraries in German-speaking countries are invited to contribute towards this total. On each book’s landing page, the current status of the crowdfunding campaign is displayed in real time via a progress bar.

Do you already have partial funding? Excellent – this will be directly added to the funding target and significantly increases the chances of success. But you can still take part even without existing funding: throughout the entire crowdfunding period, there is the option to contribute third-party funds.

If enough support is raised, the book will be published as Open Access – permanently and freely accessible worldwide.

How it works:

  1. Submit your manuscript:
Submit your manuscript as usual to one of the publishers participating in P2O:
The publication process and registration with the platform are handled by the publisher as normal. No grant application is required. If you have already secured partial funding beforehand, this can be included in the crowdfunding total.

  2. Selection by the Publisher:
As the platform operates on an interdisciplinary basis, selections are not made on the basis of academic discipline. The work must simply be an anthology or a monograph that the publisher deems suitable following its quality control process.

  3. Crowdfunding starts:
Once the publisher notifies the platform, the crowdfunding campaign begins. Libraries are invited to contribute to the funding of the specific publication. If the target amount is reached, your book will be published as an open-access publication.

  4. Once the crowdfunding campaign has ended:

    a) Open Access publication:
Your book is published as open access and is available to download free of charge from the publisher’s website and via OAPEN.

    b) If funding is not secured:
Your book will be published as normal by the publisher – as an e-book behind a paywall.

    c) Author pledge
If the crowdfunding campaign is not successful, the author has the option to cover the remaining costs him-/herelf and proceed with publishing in Open Access.

FAQs

When and where can I report partial funding?
Any partial funding received will be reported directly to the publisher, who will then pass this information on to the website. Funding can be secured and reported throughout the entire crowdfunding process.

Which publications are eligible?
At present, funding is available only for monographs and edited volumes, but not for journals.

What happens if the crowdfunding campaign is not successful?
If the crowdfunding campaign is unsuccessful, the author has the option of stepping in and covering the remaining amount. At the same time, it is possible to seek funding throughout the entire crowdfunding process.
If this is not possible, there will be no open-access edition and the e-book will be published as normal behind a paywall.

How long does the crowdfunding process take?
The funding period is specified individually by the publisher and should be agreed with the authors.
