Information for Libraries
Would you like to acquire academic monographs and edited volumes efficiently whilst simultaneously driving forward the open access transition in a sustainable way?
With P2O (Purchase to Open), you can combine both in a simple and procurement-oriented manner. P2O is an innovative, collaborative funding model that enables libraries to collectively make individual publications available as open access, in a transparent and community-based way. It was jointly initiated by libraries, publishers and library suppliers, and implemented in practice by the retail sector and publishers..
Join us in driving collective progress!
P2O is an open project and invites all libraries to play an active role in shaping the open access transformation for monographs. Your participation promotes high-quality content and supports a resource-efficient open access model, with listings on OAPEN and DOAB, amongst others.
Contact your library supplier to integrate P2O titles into your acquisition processes, or visit the P2O platform to discover current pledging projects and get involved.

How it works for your library:
P2O seamlessly integrates support for open-access monographs and edited volumes into your established acquisition processes:
- Project submission by publishers:
Publishers submit their academic book projects (monographs and edited volumes) with an ISBN to P2O, with the aim of making them available via open access. In doing so, they set a funding target that covers the costs of open-access publication, as well as a minimum threshold for a pledge.
- Selection by your subject librarian:
As usual, your subject specialists select academic monographs and edited volumes for your collection according to their criteria.
- Your pledge – the binding pre-order:
You submit your ‘pledge’ (binding pre-order) for a title via your preferred library supplier. This is done via the ‘traditional’ route and at the standard monograph prices set by the publisher for a campus licence for the e-book. The processing of individual P2O titles takes place close to the point of purchase: publisher – distributor – library.
- Transparency and progress indicator:
The current status of pledges is displayed daily via a dashboard on the P2O platform. There, you can track at any time how much support is still required for the open-access publication within a specified timeframe.
- The outcome of your pledge – always added value:
a) Open access publication:
If sufficient funds are raised through the pledges and the predefined minimum threshold
is reached, the book will be published as Open Access – permanently and freely accessible worldwide.
b) E-book license:
If the minimum threshold is not reached, the participating libraries that have made a pledge
will automatically acquire the campus licence for the e-book. The price for this licence is identical
to that of the pledge. This provides certainty for your budget planning, as you will in any case
receive a relevant title for your users at the same price.
